My Story
When I started veterinary school, I imagined my career would look like many veterinarians'. I thought I'd spend my days diagnosing illnesses, performing surgery, and helping pets recover.
I never imagined that helping families say goodbye would become the most meaningful part of my career.
After graduating from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, I worked in general practice, emergency medicine, urgent care, and relief. I loved the variety and the medicine, but I kept finding myself drawn to the conversations that happened when there was nothing left to cure.
Those moments taught me something veterinary school never could.
Families don't remember every medication or treatment recommendation. They remember how they felt.
They remember whether someone took the time to listen, whether they felt rushed, and whether their best friend was able to leave this world peacefully.
That realization changed the direction of my career.
Today, I dedicate my work to veterinary hospice, palliative care, and in-home euthanasia because I believe every pet deserves a peaceful passing in the place they feel safest: home.
I don't see my job as helping pets die.
I see it as helping families honor a lifetime of unconditional love.
Every home I walk into has a different story. Some families have had their dog for fifteen years. Others are saying goodbye far too soon. I've laughed with families as they shared favorite memories, cried alongside them during heartbreaking goodbyes, and witnessed just how deep the bond between people and their pets truly is.
Those experiences have changed me.
They've taught me that being a veterinarian isn't just about medicine. It's about showing up during life's hardest moments with compassion, honesty, and empathy.
Outside of home visits, I share educational videos and stories online with one goal: helping families feel a little less alone. Whether it's explaining how to know when it's time, easing fears about euthanasia, or simply reminding someone that their grief is normal, I hope my work gives people the confidence to make decisions from a place of love rather than guilt.
Being invited into someone's home on one of the hardest days of their life is a privilege I never take for granted.
It is, without question, the greatest honor of my career.
